Subject: upgrade to v8.5.2: provisioning error
Feedback Type: Problem
Product Area: Notes Client
Technical Area: Install
Platform: Windows
Release: 8.5.2
Reproducible: Always

When smart upgrading Notes client 8.5 (Single Sign-on, Multiuser setup) to v8.5.2 I get the error:

"File C:\Program Files\lotus\notes\framework\.provisioning_rc not found. Provisioning process failed to launch or was terminated before status could be determined."
All Notes Shortcuts from the start menu and desktop are gone. Notes standard does not start, but Notes Basic does.

I I read and tried as many possible solutions I could find with Google, but still no joy.

Background: the workstations where the error occurs have been (smart)upgraded in the past from Notes version 6.5x or 7.02 to version 8.5. OS= Windows XP SP3. Program folder path is: c:\program files\Lotus\Notes.
Datafolder is in the user profile.

Upgrading directly from 8.5 to 8.5.2 fails with the above error. Then I tried upgrading from 8.5 to 8.5.1. This succeeded, and also the next upgrade from 8.5.1 to 8.5.1 FP4. But upgrade from FP4 to 8.5.2 gives again that error.
When I do a clean install of v8.5, it can be upgraded to 8.5.2 without any problem.

Here are a few of the things I tried so far:
- installed the upgrade manually as admin to rule out insufficient permissions;
- uninstalled antivirus program to rule out locked files;
- I started setup.exe from the command prompt, making sure Notes had not run after reboot;
- I tried to upgrade with: msiexec /i "Lotus Notes 8.5.2.msi" INSTALLCONFIGURATION=multiuser

Removing the workspace folder before starting the upgrade results in the same provisioning error.

Here are some of many more similar errors in LotusInstall.log:
MSI ERROR: "UpgradeUtils/uiInitialize (Line 1459): Error - 'GetPropertyFromMSI' for 'IBM_IS_ADMINISTRATOR' failed with return code '234' - More data is available.
MSI ERROR: "UpgradeUtils/UpdateRegForMultiUser (Line 6341): Error - 'GetPropertyFromRegistry' for 'REGDATAPATHPROPERTY' failed with return code '2' - The system cannot find the file specified."
MSI ERROR: "UpgradeUtils/UpdateRegForMultiUser (Line 6344): Error - 'GetPropertyFromRegistry' for REGCOMMONDATAPATHPROPERTY' failed with return code '2' - The system cannot find the file specified."
2010-10-14T09:07:00.0--1:00 MSI ERROR: "UpgradeUtils/UpdateRegForMultiUser (Line 6355): Error - 'Unable to open registry key ' for 'SOFTWARE\Lotus\Notes' failed with return code '2' - The system cannot find the file specified."
MSI ERROR: "UpgradeUtils/INTL_RemoveUpdateMUIDAT (Line 5636): Error - 'GetPropertyFromRegistry' for 'MUI_ISO' failed with return code '2' - The system cannot find the file specified."

After a failed upgrade I can copy the subfolder "framework" from an upgraded workstation to the failed workstation. Then Notes.exe 8.5.2 does start, but this is too cumbersome to do on 100 workstations. I need smartupgrade to work and do not want to uninstall every client first.

Is there anyone who has an idea what I could do to perform a normal upgrade?
